Three Yamaha® ATVs and two Yamaha® UTVs are in the forest.

ATVs Vs. UTVs

Are you new to the powersports world? If so, you might be confused by all the various terms and acronyms. For example, what exactly is the difference between an ATV and a UTV? They have similar names, but these vehicles are actually quite different. Keep reading to find out how, then come see for yourself here at Northern Power Sports! We have a great selection of ATVs and UTVs for sale at our dealership in Fairbanks, AK.

What Are ATVs?

All-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, are also known as quads or four-wheelers. Whatever you call them, ATVs are off-road vehicles with four wheels, handlebars, and a saddle seat. There are some two-person models out there, but most ATVs are designed to accommodate a single rider. They come in various shapes and sizes, but they tend to be a lot smaller than UTVs.

What Are UTVs?

Depending on who you ask, UTV stands for either “utility task vehicle” or “utility terrain vehicle.” UTVs are also called side by sides, thanks to their bench seats that place the rider and passenger side by side. UTVs can accommodate two to six people, and they often have lots of space for storage, too. They are larger and heavier than ATVs, and they are operated with pedals and a steering wheel. UTVs also feature roll cages for safety.

Which One is Right For Me?

Each option has its advantages, so how do you determine whether an ATV or UTV is the right choice for your needs? The main question is whether you want the option to ride with passengers. If the answer is yes, you should go with a UTV.

Do you need a powerful workhorse that can do all your heavy lifting? While both ATVs and UTVs are tough and versatile, you can haul heavier loads with a UTV. They also come with more storage space for all your tools and equipment.

If you want a quick, maneuverable ride that can handle the twists and turns of backcountry trails, you should consider an ATV. The slim profile of an ATV makes it perfect for navigating width-restricted trails and exploring remote areas.
