Types of Snowmobiles

There are several categories of snowmobile on the market, each with its own advantages. Your choice will primarily depend on your level of riding experience.

As a new rider, you should reach for an entry-level snowmobile. These are also known as trail models. Trail models come with engines that range from 60 to 70 HP, and they are lighter and easier to handle than more advanced models. For average recreational use, most riders will be satisfied with a trail model.

When you gain the necessary skill, you can upgrade to a performance snowmobile. Models with engines that generate more than 85 HP fall into this category. Performance snowmobiles are heavier than trail models, due to their larger engines and more robust suspension systems. These models are highly maneuverable, making them ideal for competitive riding.

Touring snowmobiles are larger and heavier than both performance and trail models, and they are often designed to accommodate two riders. These models are equipped with additional comfort and safety features, like larger windshields and side-mounted mirrors. If you plan to spend long hours on your snowmobile, a touring model is a great option.

Mountain snowmobiles are configured for mountain riding, with narrower frames and longer tracks that can maneuver more easily in deep snow. Because horsepower is lost at higher elevations, mountain models can pack engines up to 170 HP. These models are best used for navigating mountainous terrain, not for trail riding.

Models and Features

When you begin to shop around for a snowmobile, you will discover that each category contains a wide range of models and features. Before you get overwhelmed by all the options, you should focus on which style of engine you prefer. A two-stroke engine can provide a higher power-to-weight ratio, while a four-stroke engine is more powerful overall. If you need a hardworking utility sled, a four-stroke engine will serve you best.

Next, determine the track length you require. Shorter tracks have a tighter turn radius, while longer tracks are more maneuverable in deep snow. If you plan to venture off the trail, you should opt for longer tracks.

Making a Budget

As with any major purchase, you should always have a budget in mind when shopping for a snowmobile. You will find it much easier to make a decision when you limit your search to models you can afford!

When budgeting for a snowmobile, remember to account for the total cost of ownership. That will include the ongoing costs of fuel, maintenance, and insurance, along with any storage fees.
