Guide to UTV Maintenance

Proper maintenance of your UTV is essential for safety and performance. These are tough, tenacious vehicles, but they still need a little TLC every once in a while! Not sure where to start? Read on for a quick primer on UTV maintenance from the folks at Northern Power Sports.

If you are still in the market for a UTV, you can find plenty of makes and models to choose from here at Northern Power Sports. We welcome customers from North Pole, College, and beyond at our dealership in Fairbanks, AK.

Tires

Your UTV tires should always be inflated to the pressure level indicated in the user manual. Check the tire pressure before each ride to ensure safety and optimal performance. Make sure that all four tires are equally inflated, and adjust them as needed.

You should also check the condition of the tire treads and sidewalls before each ride, looking for signs of damage and excessive wear. UTV tires can usually last for about 8,000 miles before they need to be replaced. When choosing replacement tires, make sure they are the correct size and load rating for your UTV.

Battery

The battery in your UTV should be checked regularly to make sure it is holding a charge. If you notice a significant decrease in your battery's performance, it may need to be replaced. The average lead acid battery in a UTV can last about 3-5 years. If you are unsure whether or not it's time to replace the battery, you can always ask a professional.

Engine Fluids

The engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant levels in your UTV should be checked on a regular basis. The user manual provided with your UTV will specify what kind of engine oil to use. If you notice any debris or metal shavings in the oil reservoir, this could indicate engine trouble, and you should have your UTV inspected by a professional.

As for fuel, pure gasoline is the best choice for UTVs. If you opt for standard fuel that contains ethanol, you should drain the carburetor after each ride to prevent buildup and corrosion.

No matter what kind of fuel you use, make sure to either drain the gas tank before placing your UTV in long-term storage or add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from going bad.

Driveline

Even when your UTV engine is in top condition, a damaged driveline component can cause problems. The drive belt and clutch should be regularly inspected for wear and tear. If you notice any signs of damage, make sure to consult a professional.
